Art Around the World - French Masters

“There are always flowers. for those who want to see them.” - Henri Matisse

Join Luca Pietrosanti, art historian extraordinaire + friends for a journey through the lives and works of just four of the great French artists and artistic practices from the Medieval to Modern era.

WEEK 1 - JANUARY 16: Our journey starts in the Île-de-France region, in the heart of medieval France, to witness the birth of Gothic Art. We’ll understand its religious and cultural contexts and learn about the architectural innovations that allowed the creation of monumental cathedrals bathed in the colored light of stained-glass windows.

WEEK 2 - JANUARY 23: Visiting the Gobelin Manufactory in Paris, founded in the 17th century by the “Sun King” Louis XIV, we’ll discover the secrets of tapestry making and pay homage to the anonymous masters that since the 17th century have been creating wall hangings famous for their unique elegance, vibrant colors, rich textures, and intricate designs.

WEEK 3 - JANUARY 30: Traveling in time towards the 1700 we’ll head south to Provence region, to be charmed by the Rococò masterpieces of Jean-Honoré Fragonard. In his home city, Grasse, known as the world's capital of perfume, we’ll discover what inspired his sensual and playful style of painting and what made it fall in disgrace after the French Revolution.

WEEK 4 - FEBRUARY 6: The lights and colors of the French Riviera also inspired the greatest French Fauvist painter, Henri Matisse. In Vence, we’ll discover what he considered his greatest accomplishment: the decoration of chapel of Saint-Marie du Rosaire. We’ll explore the creative process that, through the combination of multiple artistic techniques—painting, sculpture, collages and stained glass windows—allowed Matisse to fuse national traditions with modernity.
