Art of the East - Japan - Week 2
“Beauty is thus an altered state of consciousness, an extraordinary moment of poetry and grace.” -- Leonard Koren
Join Luca Pietrosanti, art historian extraordinaire + friends on a journey eastward from the shores of the west to the islands of Japan.
This tour will establish a foundation of understanding of how the exchange of ideas, techniques and materials between Japan and the West, influenced artists on both sides of the world.
Week 2: Japanese Aesthetics: Wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in nature. In this session, Luca shares the 7 aesthetic principals of wabi-sabi and compares and contrasts the principals with corresponding ideals held by the Western art history tradition. But, of course! All roads lead back to ancient Greece. Those Romans knew a good thing of beauty when they saw it!
After gaining an initial understanding of one Eastern art history perspective, we can travel virtually and in real life together through Art Around the World - Japan.
