Luca continues Art Around the World in Toledo, Spain, where we explore the world of Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known by all as El Greco.

El Greco, like Vermeer and Botticelli, was rescued from obscurity by an avid group of nineteenth-century collectors, critics, and artists and became one of the select members of the modern pantheon of great painters. For Picasso, as for so many later admirers, El Greco was both the quintessential Spaniard and a proto-modern—a painter of the spirit who “felt the mystical inner construction” of life. Per Franz Marc and the members of the Blue Rider school, he was someone whose art stood as a rejection of the materialist culture of modern life. El Greco was born in Crete, traveled to Venice and to Rome, eventually settling in Toledo, Spain.
Why did the city of Toledo inspire El Greco to paint, build and live his entire life there? His paintings still remaining in the churches and museums of Toledo, including The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, as well as the influential The View of Toledo and Luca’s masterful guidance will help us understand why. Let’s explore!
