SPANISH MASTERS

Join Luca + friends for a journey through the lives and works of the greatest Spanish artists from the Baroque age to Modern era.

We’ll start in Seville with the works of Francisco de Zurbarán, who together with Velasquez, were the most significant masters of the Spanish Golden Age. Known for infusing religious paintings with Caravagesque realism, Zurbarán inaugurated the Baroque season in southern Spain.

In Madrid we’ll meet Francisco Goya, considered “the last of the old masters,”who expresses in his intense and haunting works the contradictions of the age of the revolution divided between the illuministic faith in reason and the brutal consequences of the Napoleonic wars.

We’ll then travel to the east coast on the footsteps of the innovative Spanish impressionist Joaquín Sorolla—master of light—known for his dexterous representation of the people, landscape and shimmering water under the bright Spanish sun.

The lively “calles” of Barcelona inspired the first artistic experiments of the young Pablo Picasso: in the museum dedicated to his production we will see from a new perspective what led the Spanish master to ignite the greatest figurative revolution in modern art.
