Our destination for Art Around the World—Live with Luca: The Dutch Golden Age with Rembrandt and Vermeer @ Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

The Dutch Golden Age (17th century) was a period of great wealth for the Dutch Republic. The arts and sciences flourished as is clearly demonstrated by the famous paintings by the masters Rembrandt and Vermeer, among others.

During this time trade expanded quickly, thanks to the Dutch East India Company, which attracted immigrants and stimulated the growth of the main cities and ports.

The period also had a dark side. Take a few minutes to read the New York Times article, “A Dutch Golden Age? That’s Only Half the Story,” reflecting on the museums in the Netherlands that are ditching historical terms and names, and updating collections as they grapple with the legacy of slavery and colonialism.

Luca addresses the good, bad and the beautiful as he takes us virtually to Amsterdam where we explore masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer, the masters of the Dutch Golden Age.
